Old Cherry Tree needs Council care and attention - prune required

Reported via desktop in the Trees category anonymously at 12:12, Tue 23 September 2025

Sent to Royal Borough of Greenwich less than a minute later. FixMyStreet ref: 8202646.

This has been reported various times over the past 2 years and nothing has been done. Two councillors are now aware. The Tree needs urgent pruning and lopping and is now showing more and more bacterial canker.

Surely there is a duty of care with the tree by the council. especially as it is an old cherry tree and they become brittle with age.

Updates

  • This poor tree is still being hit badly by the B16 buses pulling into the nearby bus stop. I do hope the council takes it "Duty of care" for this tree to "maintain public safety" very soon. Still nothing has been done. last update from the council below - almost 3 weeks ago, especially when the tree is showing extensive bacterial canker and is an old brittle cherry tree. On the 24th Sept 2025 the Council’s Senior Tree Officer (Highways) said - "The tree has recently been inspected, and it has been recommended for reduction. This work will be carried out within the next couple of months. The tree is in fair condition with no major defects, so the work is not considered a high priority.”

  • Just hope Fiona Hall can create Chris's law, which would require councils to maintain a register of high-risk trees identified by location, species and age, legislating for those trees to be inspected on a regular basis, this was brought to Parliament this month. Would save lives as well as money for councils, for example Cheshire East had to pay half a million for causing the death of Chris Hall.
