Pavement in front of the parade of shops in the Shooters Hill Road, between Weyman Road and Minnie Bennet House
Reported in the Pavements/footpaths category anonymously at 17:52, Thu 20 February 2020
Sent to Royal Borough of Greenwich 3 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 2011570.
This pavement is still in very poor condition in Jan 2020. Many of the paving stones are broken and very uneven. My friend recently had a bad fall on this pavement because it was uneven. One cause of the pavement being broken is that the service road behind the shops is unusable (deeply pitted and cratered all the way along) and therefore deliveries and contractors prefer to drive on to the pavement in front of the parade and park there: this heavy usage breaks up the paving. The pavement in question is very wide but (unlike the nearby parade in the Old Dover Road which has numerous street trees to improve the environment) it has no trees or planting whatsover. This lack of greenery lowers the quality of the environment for local people, and leaves shoppers and cafe customers exposed to traffic pollution from the busy Shooters Hill Road. Tree planting should be included as an essential part of RBG's next repair of the paving here. The pavement is wide enough for three or four groups of trees, as long as the trees do not have broad crowns. Birch, hawthorn, crab apple or similar are suitable. This pavement is wide enough to provide space for larger than usual planting areas around the groups of trees, so that the autumn leaf-fall can be swept on to the planting area under the tree canopy.
